Feel Like Yourself Again (A Menopause Conversation Worth Having)

By Doc | Stronger Personal Training

Here’s a topic most won’t touch with a ten foot pole.

Menopause is not a weakness. It’s not an excuse. And it’s definitely not something you should be navigating alone with a Google search and a Facebook group full of conflicting opinions.

It’s a physiological shift that affects everything — your body composition, your energy, your sleep, your strength, your mood, your recovery. And the fitness industry has done an embarrassingly poor job of addressing it in any meaningful way.

Either they ignore it entirely or they sell you to cut off life and call it a solution.

We’re done with that.

What’s Actually Happening

Here’s the honest version.

As you move through perimenopause your estrogen and progesterone levels begin to fluctuate and eventually decline. This isn’t just a reproductive change — these hormones influence virtually every system in your body.

Muscle mass becomes harder to maintain (drop in Estrogen). Fat distribution shifts — particularly toward the midsection — in ways that have nothing to do with what you’re eating. Inflammation goes up. Sleep quality deteriorates. Recovery slows. Energy becomes unpredictable. And the things that worked for your body at 35 simply stop working the same way at 48.

This is not in your head. This is biology.

And here’s what makes it genuinely frustrating — most of the standard fitness advice women receive was developed on men. The research, the protocols, the programming. Even a lot of the nutrition guidance. It wasn’t built for a body navigating hormonal shifts, and applying it without adjustment is why so many women feel like they’re doing everything right and getting nowhere.

You’re not broken. You’re just working with a different set of variables that require a different approach.

What Actually Works

The good news — yes it exists — is that the right approach during perimenopause is not only effective, it’s often the most empowering fitness work women do in their entire lives.

Strength training is non-negotiable. This is the single most important thing you can do for your body during this transition (realistically should have been long before). Muscle is your metabolism. It’s your bone density. It’s your insulin sensitivity. It’s your ability to move through your life with confidence and capability for the next thirty years. The women who come out of perimenopause feeling strong and capable are almost universally the ones who lifted weights through it.

Protein requirements go up. Your body becomes less efficient at building and maintaining muscle during this transition which means you need more protein to achieve the same result. Most women are significantly under-eating protein — not because they’re not trying, but because the target moved and they didn’t get the memo.

Not all cardio is created equal. High intensity cardio cranks up cortisol — and elevated cortisol during perimenopause is gasoline on a fire. It’s still necessary, but strategic lower intensity cardio and purposeful strength training does more for body composition during this phase than grinding away on an elliptical. Yuck.

Hormone optimization matters. This is a conversation worth having with the right medical professional — not a wellness influencer, not a supplement company, an actual qualified practitioner who understands the full picture of what your hormones are doing and what options exist to support them.

Despite the out-dated research about hormone replacement, this area of study is truly fascinating and is helping women in their 40s get their life back.

Recovery is not optional. Sleep, stress management, body temp fluctuations and recovery protocols become more important during perimenopause than at any other point in your fitness life. Your body is doing significant work just managing the hormonal transition — give it the resources to do that well.

I get it, the solution seems confusing and overwhelming. The world telling you to take it easy, a pre-menopausal women giving you a You Got This Queen workout, and the same expectations by some lab coat in the 90s.

Peri-menopausal women are under-served and we’re here to change that.

Why We’re Hosting This Workshop

Because I watch women come through our door every week who are frustrated, confused, and convinced they’ve somehow failed at their own body.

They haven’t failed. They’ve just been given the wrong information — or no information at all.

On Saturday July 29th at 10am we’re hosting a free Menopause Workshop right here at Stronger. Four speakers covering everything that actually matters:

How to keep moving and training effectively through the transition. How to get stronger when your body feels like it’s working against you. How to arrange your nutrition to support what your body actually needs right now. And how to optimize your hormones to attack the body composition changes that come with this phase of life.

No fluff. No proprietary creams. No one trying to sell you anything. Just real information from real professionals designed to help you understand what’s happening and what to do about it.

It’s free. It’s at the gym. And it’s specifically for women in perimenopause who are ready to stop guessing and start getting answers.

The Bottom Line

Your body is changing. That’s not a problem to be solved — it’s a transition to be navigated well.

The women who come out of perimenopause feeling their best aren’t the ones who fought their body the hardest. They’re the ones who finally got the right information and the right support.

That’s what Saturday is about.

Come with your questions. Leave with a plan.
