Finding The Right Personal Trainer: Why not all gyms are for all people

Heyyy Stronger Fam!

Let’s start with a bold question……are you a hypocrite?

I know, it’s a loaded question! But believe it or not, some people are. Many professionals say one thing and then do another.

A conundrum often apparent in the fitness realm.

For instance….

Ever step into a public gym (or on the beach) and someone who looked like they were carved by Michelangelo? (Cue the raucous exhale!)

Believe it or not, a lot of these people become personal trainers and gym owners.

Why?

Because they look the part, and people ask them for their advice (Don’t believe me? Sit in on my interviews).

Now, I get it.

We all want to work with the best, whether it’s a financial advisor who’s a multi-millionaire, a doctor who embodies health, a teacher who constantly prioritizes their students, or a personal trainer who looks like a Greek god.

But here’s the kicker—many factors contribute to the success of these individuals, including:

  • Genetics
  • Life circumstances
  • Extracurricular activities (let’s be real about the not-so-real influences)
  • Lifestyle choices
  • Borderline compulsiveness

And so much more

The unfortunate reality is there are smart, great, and practical coaches out who look like they crawled out of a Primanti’s commercial.

As the song goes…..it takes two!

If you’re not picking up what I’m putting down – a while back, I did a podcast diving deep into this very subject.

Feel free to check it out [HERE].

The Three Rules for Choosing Who to Work With so that you feel heard, accepted, and supported on your journey.

So, who should you trust with this next big step?

Here are three distinct rules to keep in mind:

  1. Do They Meet You Where You’re At?

You have a unique make-up, history, experience, and (unfortunately) failures. You want someone who understands your unique journey and doesn’t expect you to fit a cookie-cutter mold.

  1. Do They Make Decisions Based on Research and Experience?

We don’t need someone in a lab coat and clipboard excel punching every little thing you do.

But they should have a background and experience.

Look for coaches who educate you throughout the process, and ensures you understand the hows and whys of your training.

  1. Do They Encourage a Wholesome Lifestyle?

Life happens, and it’s messy.

A good coach won’t just berate you for enjoying a donut—hello, balance! You want someone who promotes a positive approach to health without judgment.

This is about sustainability……not who gets a reward for surviving the biggest ass kicking.

Let’s face it—finding the right gym, a good coach, and a tailor fit can seem impossible.

If you’re unsure where to find this supportive environment, then check out my podcast to dive deeper into this topic  [HERE].

And if you’re ready to take your health into your own hands, we are always here with a pen in hand (no clipboard) ready to assist you in finding the best solution for your goals.

Don’t wait too long to make the change! Remember, the journey is about more than just the destination.
