How to Sleep Like a Baby and Wake Up with a Surge of Energy

Hey there

Let me ask you something: when you wake up in the morning, how do you feel?

Are you energized, or do you feel like a zombie?

After lunch, are you ready to take on the world or just fighting the urge to nap?

If you find yourself in the second category, you’re not alone.

Sleep is often lacking, with a staggering ⅔ of Americans not hitting the recommended 7-9 hours a night.

Crazy, right?

This lack of ZZZs doesn’t just leave you groggy; it can lead to serious health risks like heart disease, diabetes, and even chronic illnesses.

But fear not…..Doc is here to help!

In this blog, I’ll give you simple, actionable tips to get prepped for bed so you can sleep like you’ve got nothing on your mind.

Let’s get started:

1. The Myth of Sleep Hours

Many people think that if they go to bed at 11 PM and wake up at 6 AM, they’ve racked up 7 hours of sleep.

Not so fast!

Research shows that even healthy sleepers are up an average of 30-60 minutes a night.

So that “7 hours” just got docked to 6…….and your immune system is already taking a hit.

And let’s be real – sleep apnea and insomnia are becoming more common, with some folks getting less than 5 hours a night.

Oof!

Did you know that every hour, someone dies from a traffic accident due to fatigue? Let that sink in.

2. The Importance of Consistency

Here’s the kicker: we can’t just “make up” sleep on the weekends. You miss those crucial sleep phases, and that’s it!

While life happens, studies recommend adjusting your sleep schedule by a maximum of one hour.

Ideally, a half hour is the sweet spot to ensure a consistent routine.

Whether it’s Monday or Christmas, aim to go to bed and wake up within 30 minutes of your set time.

3. Understanding Sleep Stages

Did you know we go through several phases of sleep each night? These include NREM Stages 1, 2, 3 (Deep Sleep), and REM Sleep.

Light Sleep: Stages 1 and 2 help regulate sleep and contribute to short-term memory retention.

Deep Sleep: Crucial for physical restoration, muscle growth, and flushing out brain toxins.

REM Sleep: Happens later at night, allowing for cognitive processing, emotional regulation, and, yes, dreaming.

If you’re living on limited sleep, you may find it harder to function.

Lack of REM sleep can even lead to hallucinations, sooooo if you’ve ever felt like you saw something after waking up early, that might just be your dreams coming to life!

4. Don’t Rely on Supplements Alone

Many people hunt for that magic pill or potion for better sleep. Spoiler alert……most sleep medications aren’t the golden ticket they claim to be.

Take Ambien, for instance. It’s a sedative that blocks your brain’s circuitry, making you feel sleepy without necessarily improving sleep quality.

It can even mess with your memory formation.

Not cool!

As for supplements like melatonin? While they can help if you have a deficiency, they won’t do much for quality unless you truly need it.

Other options like magnesium and GABA have some street cred but limited evidence to support their effectiveness.

5. Power Naps—The Right Way

Naps can be a great addition to your day. But if you’re going to nap, keep it to 30 minutes or less. This way, you’ll recharge without completely derailing your sleep schedule.
