Hey Stronger Fam!
Something I love to see these days….water bottles are like purses, handbags, and satchels. They’re in everyone’s hand and passenger seat.
The rub – many pride themselves on how much they drink…..and not to be a cynic but this really doesn’t matter.
Let me explain!
Why Hydration Matters
Staying hydrated is vital for pretty much every function in your body. It affects everything from energy levels to heart health to muscle performance. And let’s not forget that an adequately hydrated body means clearer skin, better digestion, and improved mood.
But it’s more than that (though simple).
Hydration is really just water balance in the body. You lose it by tinkling, tootling, sweating, digestion, moving, and on and on.
Do you ever feel sluggish or unfocused? It might just be that you’re running low on fluids!
What keeps the fire “stoked” if you will (terrible analogy) – electrolytes in the body.
Hydration is crucial, and understanding electrolytes is what takes your hydration game to the next level.
What Are Electrolytes?
These little homies are essential minerals, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. They help regulate nerve and muscle function, balance fluids, and maintain acid-base balance (Chemistry PTSD anyone?). In short, they keep fluid balance with function.
For Example
When you sweat (some more than others), you lose not only water but also these crucial electrolytes. That’s why just drinking plain water isn’t always enough, especially if you’re working out hard or sweating buckets.
Fun Fact: Some people are heavy salt sweaters and have to pay more attention to this during activities. Ever see a white band on your hat after working outside?
Signs You Need to Hydrate
These are more severe signs, but things you should pay attention to especially when active.
Dry Mouth: If your mouth feels like the Sahara Desert, it’s time to drink up.
Dark Urine: Light-colored urine is a good sign! If it’s dark, you need more fluids.
Fatigue or Dizziness: Feeling tired or dizzy? You might just need a hydration boost!
Muscle Cramps: A sure sign you’re missing those electrolytes.
Getting Rehydrated
Drink Water Throughout the Day: at least 3 liters of water as a baseline and add more with activity.
Eat: Fruits like cantaloupe, berries, watermelon, bananas, grapes, oranges, pears, and pineapples. Veggies like lettuce, cabbage, spinach, squash, carrots, broccoli, and avocados (you can argue whether this is a fruit or veggie). Dairy products like yogurt, cottage cheese, and ricotta.
Electrolyte Drinks: Salt is the big thing we’re focused on here. Electrolyte drinks should be higher in salt with at least a 3:1 Salt to Potassium ratio (for instance 500mg of salt to 200mg potassium).
Also, don’t be afraid of carbs in your electrolyte drink. Salts like to hitch a ride with carbs when going into the blood stream in muscles.
Monitor Your Sweat Rate: If you’re sweating a lot, you need to up your fluid and electrolyte intake. You can do this by weighing yourself before and after an activity and drinking fluids accordingly.
One more side note: Too much water is a thing. If you drink too much water too fast your body with “think” you are hydrated and overexpend (piss out) what you need (think 1 Liter per hour).
Final Thoughts
Remember, hydration isn’t just about drinking water; it’s about ensuring your body gets what it truly needs to function at its best.
Bobby Bouchet beware, but sometimes water isn’t good enough. Enough water with adequate electrolytes will keep you moving, focused, and prepared for that hectic AF schedule of yours.
