Navigating Menopause: It Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Hey there, Stronger Fam!

Let’s dive into a topic that’s often shrouded in mystery and misinformation……

Menopause.

It’s inevitable that with age comes madness. And for women, there’s another “M” word that people often fear: menopause.

We hear about it often (but for the people in the back) this is the phase when a woman’s reproductive years come to a close, marked by a drop in estrogen and progesterone.

This process can start in your late thirties and continue through your fifties, turning into a chaotic hormonal cocktail for many.

And alongside it often comes the belief that rapid weight gain, brittle bones, and a myriad of other health issues are inescapable.

But hold your horses……..let’s bust kick some myths in the teeth!

The Truth About Hormones and Your Body

Sure, hormonal fluctuations can affect your metabolism and weight distribution.

But here’s the kicker……much of this is due to a less-than-ideal baseline established in your younger years.

If you weren’t practicing strength training in your 20s and 30s, when the big “M” hits, you may find it harder to maintain your health.

But here’s the bright side. You can still build muscle and improve cardiovascular health even after menopause. Don’t believe me? Just check out the many strong women at Stronger who are defying the odds every day.

Bone Health Matters

Let’s talk about bones.

Something that estrogen helps keep strong. But, again, a lot of what we experience later in life can stem from that previous baseline.

Regular strength training, along with a diet rich in protein, calcium, and vitamin D, can significantly reduce the risks of osteoporosis and prepare you for a long, thriving life.

Love Your Heart

Okay, are you an active person? That’s awesome! But here’s a sobering fact: only 20-30% of women over 30 are truly giving their heart the love it deserves. Oof!

Don’t wait for menopause. More intense exercise that is properly guided can keep that ticker ticking!

Let’s Talk Stress

Ah, stress….the sneaky little bastard that doesn’t just appear when menopause arrives.

Life gets chaotic at this stage, whether it’s dealing with tattering teenagers, stubbornly aging parents, or partners mid-life crises we all dread (just kidding companarino).

But remember, correlation doesn’t equal causation. Just because you hit menopause doesn’t mean your stress levels are automatically through the roof. It’s time to find effective ways to manage it, and that’s where we come in (wink, wink).

Sleep and Hot Flashes

Feeling the heat? With stress peaks come sleep troughs.

To gain control we yield to staying up late and rising early, juggling life like a circus performer, and good sleep hygiene goes bye bye.

Keep your sleeping environment cool and dark to minimize the impact of those pesky hot flashes. And if you share a bed with a partner, consider separate blankets….it’s a game changer.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a woman, menopause is part of life, but it doesn’t have to be the end of it.

The dangers of misleading media can make it seem like you should just bury your head and deal with the consequences, but I say—nay, nay!

If you’re on track with your health, amazing…..celebrate those wins!
